Credit card comparison Switzerland 2026

Credit cards
Updated on

Which credit card is best for you depends on how much you pay with it and how often you are abroad. For medium use, the Cashback Cards American Express is the cheapest credit card in Switzerland as of 14 October 2026; for payments abroad, it is the Supercard Kreditkarte.

Evaluno’s credit card comparison works this out for 65 cards, with all fees, including abroad, and minus any bonus. Choose your profile or enter your own amounts.

Key facts at a glance

Free credit cards: 15 cards have no annual fee, such as the Supercard from Coop or the Migros Cumulus Visa Free. Costs still apply, e.g. for purchases abroad or cash withdrawals.

Cashback credit cards: They credit you part of every purchase, usually 1 % or less. These include the Cashback Cards from Swisscard, poinz and the Certo! from Cembra.

Points and miles cards: They collect points such as Cumulus, Superpoints or KeyClub, which you exchange for purchases or vouchers, or Miles & More miles for flights.

Gold and platinum cards: They cost considerably more than standard cards and offer higher limits, travel insurance and sometimes airport lounge access in return.

All information without guarantee, fees, exchange rates and bonus programmes can change at any time. Granting credit is prohibited if it leads to over-indebtedness (Art. 3 UCA). Evaluno earns a commission when an account is opened through some of these links. This does not change the results or their ranking. Evaluno’s methodology

Evaluno calculates every card with the same four profiles. What counts is the cost over 2 years minus bonus, because many providers give a discount in the first year. With «Custom», you calculate with your own amounts.

The four profiles at a glance

ProfilePurchases in SwitzerlandPurchases abroadCash abroad
Low useCHF 1'20012 transactions at Ø 100EUR 6006 transactions at Ø 100–
Medium useCHF 2'40024 transactions at Ø 100EUR 1'20012 transactions at Ø 100–
High useCHF 12'000120 transactions at Ø 100EUR 6'00060 transactions at Ø 100–
Abroad–EUR 6'00060 transactions at Ø 100EUR 1'5006 withdrawals at 250

Amounts per year. Ø = average amount per transaction in the respective currency. Purchases abroad are all payments to merchants abroad, including online and in francs. For the costs over 2 years, the amounts count twice. The comparison list is sorted by the selected profile.

What the costs include

  • Annual fee and fees: Annual fee in the first and second year, membership (for example CHF 32 a year for the TCS), processing fee on purchases abroad and fees for cash withdrawals.
  • Exchange rate markup: If you pay abroad, the issuer uses its own exchange rate, which is above the market rate. Evaluno includes this markup: measured at 1.83 % for Swisscard and poinz and 3.11 % for Migros Bank, and for the other issuers with an interim value until our measurement is available. The reference rate is EUR/CHF 0.91465.
  • Bonus programmes: The bonus is deducted from the costs. Points are converted at a fixed value in francs per programme. Higher rates at partner merchants do not count. Cashback only counts if it reaches the minimum payout amount, for example CHF 25 at Cornèrcard. A welcome bonus that comes with the card counts too, such as the 5 % cashback in the first 3 months with the Cashback Cards.
  • Costs not included: Additional cards, paper statements, instalment interest, promo code offers and the value of miles.

Credit card, debit card or prepaid: the difference

Credit cards, debit cards and prepaid cards look the same and often carry the Visa or Mastercard logo. That is why they are easily confused. The key difference is billing: with a credit card you pay later, with a debit card immediately and with a prepaid card only up to the balance you have loaded.

Credit cardDebit cardPrepaid card
BillingMonthly statement, you pay laterCharged directly to your accountOnly the balance loaded in advance
Credit checkAlwaysUsually notNone
AcceptanceWorldwide, including for deposits (car hire, hotel)Worldwide, sometimes not accepted for depositsWorldwide, often not accepted for deposits
CostsAnnual fee CHF 0 to 900, fee abroad 0 to 2.5 %Often no annual fee, foreign currency depending on providerTop-up fees and annual fee possible

Revolut, neon, Yuh or Wise issue debit cards, not credit cards. That is why they are not included in this comparison.

→ You will find these cards in our neobank comparison.

What a credit card costs

What a credit card costs depends on more than the annual fee. Fees for purchases abroad, cash or paper statements can add up to more than the annual fee itself over 2 years. Swiss credit cards come with these costs:

  • Annual fee: CHF 0 to 900 a year, often with a discount in the first year.
  • Membership: The TCS cards require TCS membership, CHF 32 a year.
  • Foreign currency: Processing fee of 0 to 2.5 % per purchase.
  • Exchange rate markup: The issuer converts foreign currencies at its own rate, in the comparison 1.75 to 3.11 % above the market rate.
  • CHF payments abroad: With 61 of 65 cards, a payment in francs to a foreign merchant also costs a fee.
  • Cash: abroad, 4 % with 50 of 65 cards, at least CHF 10.
  • Instalments: 9.5 to 12 % interest if you do not pay the statement in full.
  • Paper statement: for example CHF 1.95 a month with the Supercard.

Free credit cards: 15 cards with no annual fee

15 cards never charge an annual fee, not even from the second year. With the Cornèrcard Classic and the American Express Card, only the first year is free; after that they cost CHF 100 and CHF 140 a year. For the TCS Member Mastercard, you need a TCS membership.

Is a gold or platinum card worth it?

21 gold and 9 platinum cards cost considerably more than standard cards. In return, you get more bonus, higher limits, insurance and, with 6 cards, access to airport lounges. This is how costs and benefits rise at the same providers:

Annual fees over 2 years, with bonus and extras below. Data as of 14 October 2026, according to the providers’ price lists.

The extra cost is only worth it if you really use the benefits. At UBS, the Gold card earns 0.2 % more bonus than the Classic. Its annual fee is on average CHF 75 higher in the first 2 years. You only recoup that from CHF 37'500 in spending a year.

Visa, Mastercard, American Express

Whether you have a Visa or a Mastercard hardly matters in Switzerland. The differences lie with American Express and card duos:

  • Acceptance: Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere in Switzerland and worldwide. American Express is accepted less often, especially in smaller shops, cafés and restaurants, because merchants pay higher fees for it.
  • Card duos: That is why, for example, the Amex from the Cashback Cards by Swisscard and from poinz only comes as a duo with a Visa or Mastercard. Where Amex is not accepted, you pay with the second card.
  • Costs: The provider sets the annual fee and the processing fee; in the comparison, they are always the same for Visa and Mastercard from the same provider. With the exchange rate markup, the network can make a difference: For the Supercard, PostFinance and UBS, Evaluno uses 2.14 % for Visa and 2.03 % for Mastercard until we have our own measurement.
  • Diners Club: In the comparison, Diners cards only come in the Cornèrcard Miles & More combined offer, together with a Visa.

Credit cards with cashback

How cashback works: Part of every purchase flows back to you, usually as a credit on your card statement or account, and with some cards only above a minimum amount. With Swiss credit cards, it is at most 1 % on purchases in francs, and up to 1.7 % in foreign currency with the Cornèrcard Platinum. 18 of the 65 cards offer cashback, 32 collect points and 12 miles.

Certo! Mastercard World0.25 %CHF 01 % at Migros, Coop and SBB

Data as of 14 October 2026. The welcome bonus in the first 3 months counts in the calculation, promo code offers do not.

What a bonus brings: With CHF 12'000 in purchases a year («High use» profile), 1 % cashback comes to CHF 120 a year. The bonus only covers an annual fee if you spend a lot: to offset the CHF 198 of the Raiffeisen Gold with 0.5 % cashback, you need CHF 39'600 in spending a year.

Credit cards with points programmes

How points programmes work: For every franc you spend, you collect points and later exchange them for vouchers, discounts or rewards. The provider sets how much a point is worth. For the comparison, each point is converted at a fixed value in francs:

Credit cards with Miles & More: collecting miles

How Miles & More works: Miles & More is the frequent flyer programme of the Lufthansa Group, which also includes SWISS and Edelweiss. With a Miles & More credit card, you collect miles with every purchase and later redeem them for award flights, upgrades to a higher class or rewards in the Miles & More Shop. 12 cards from Swisscard and Cornèrcard collect miles. They are not included in the costs because their value depends heavily on how you redeem them.

Credit cards abroad: foreign currency fees and cash

If you pay in euros or another foreign currency with a Swiss credit card, the provider charges a processing fee of 0 to 2.5 % per purchase. Only 4 of the 65 cards do without it: the Swisscard Kreditkarte, the two Supercard cards and the Migros Cumulus Visa Free. You still pay the issuer’s exchange rate markup with these cards.

Data as of 14 October 2026, processing fee according to the providers’ price lists, for poinz an interim value. On top comes the issuer’s exchange rate markup, in the comparison 1.75 to 3.11 %.

With EUR 6'000 in purchases a year («High use» profile), the difference between 0 and 2.5 % comes to EUR 150 a year. The exchange rate markup comes on top: at 1.75 to 3.11 %, that is another EUR 105 to 187 a year.

Dynamic currency conversion: always pay in the local currency

If a terminal or online shop abroad offers to let you pay in francs, decline and pay in the local currency. Otherwise the merchant uses its own exchange rate. On top of that, with 61 of 65 cards a payment in francs to a foreign merchant costs a fee, for example 1.5 % with the Supercard.

Cash abroad

Abroad, cash costs 4 % with 50 of the 65 cards, at least CHF 10. You can only withdraw cash entirely free of charge with the PostFinance Visa Platinum and the TCS Travel Mastercard Gold. With the Migros Cumulus Visa Free, 2 withdrawals a year up to CHF 500 are free. If you withdraw foreign currency, the exchange rate markup comes on top.

Applying for a credit card: requirements and process

Requirements: As a rule, you need to live in Switzerland, be at least 18 years old and, as a foreign national, hold a B or C permit. The provider checks your income and creditworthiness and then sets the limit. For some cards you need an account with the bank, for example at PostFinance and Raiffeisen, and for 3 cards a membership (TCS or IKEA Family).

Process: Fill in the application online, confirm your identity, wait for the credit check. It usually takes a week or more for the card to arrive.

Frequently asked questions

That depends on how you use the card. In the «Medium use» profile, the Cashback Cards American Express comes out on top, thanks to 5 % cashback in the first 3 months: over 2 years it brings in CHF 9.50 more cashback than it costs. It only comes as a duo with a Visa or Mastercard because American Express is not accepted everywhere. Without American Express, the Supercard Kreditkarte Mastercard is the cheapest at CHF 21.10. If you choose a different profile above, the list re-sorts.

For every purchase in foreign currency, providers charge a processing fee of 0 to 2.5 %, so up to EUR 2.50 on EUR 100. On top comes the issuer’s exchange rate markup, in the comparison 1.75 to 3.11 % above the market rate. Abroad, cash costs 4 % with 50 of 65 cards, at least CHF 10 per withdrawal. And with 61 cards, a payment in francs to a foreign merchant also costs a fee. In the «Abroad» profile, the cheapest card costs CHF 361.20 over 2 years (Supercard Kreditkarte Mastercard).

For most people, one is enough. A second card can be worth it if your main card is an American Express, which is not accepted everywhere. That is why there are card duos such as the Cashback Cards, poinz or SWISS Miles & More: two cards for one annual fee. Or if you often pay abroad and your main card charges a processing fee there: 4 cards in the comparison do without it. Every extra card means another statement and, depending on the card, another annual fee.

If you don’t pay the monthly statement in full, the rest becomes an instalment and interest is charged on it. For the cards in the comparison, it is 9.5 to 12 % a year, and 12 % for 57 of 65 cards. If you leave CHF 1'000 outstanding for a year, that costs up to CHF 120. If you always pay the statement in full, no interest is charged.

Abroad, a withdrawal costs 4 % with 50 of 65 cards, at least CHF 10. A withdrawal of CHF 100 therefore costs CHF 10, or 10 % of the amount. You can withdraw cash entirely free of charge with the PostFinance Visa Platinum and the TCS Travel Mastercard Gold, and with the Migros Cumulus Visa Free 2 withdrawals a year are free. If you withdraw foreign currency, the exchange rate markup comes on top. In Switzerland, most cards charge the same 4 %, at least CHF 10.

That depends on the card; travel insurance mainly comes with gold and platinum cards. Which insurance is included, for example for cancellation, travel accidents or car hire, and on what terms it applies is set out in the provider’s insurance conditions. Check there whether cover only applies if you paid for the trip with the card. Insurance is not included in the costs in the comparison because cover and conditions differ too much from one card to another.

You cancel with the card issuer, depending on the provider by letter, in the app or in e-banking. Pay the last statement in full and move subscriptions and saved payments to another card beforehand. Then cut the card through the chip and magnetic strip. Whether you get part of the annual fee back depends on the provider’s terms.

For everyday life in Switzerland, a debit card is often enough: it charges your account directly and often has no annual fee. You mainly need a credit card for deposits on hire cars and hotels, where debit cards are sometimes not accepted. The differences are set out in the table above. You will find debit cards from neobanks such as Revolut, neon or Yuh in our neobank comparison.

Yes, but no longer from Cembra. Since 2022, Migros Bank has issued the Cumulus credit cards; Cembra replaced its former Cumulus Mastercard with the Certo!. At Migros Bank, the Visa Free with no annual fee earns 1 Cumulus point per CHF 3 outside Migros, and the Visa and Mastercard Gold for CHF 200 a year earn 1 point per CHF 2.

No. For every credit card, the provider checks your income and creditworthiness and then sets the limit. Without a check, you get a prepaid card, with which you only spend the balance you loaded in advance, or a debit card linked to your account.
