Swissquote Bank: who is behind the broker?
Behind Swissquote is Swissquote Bank Ltd, based in Gland. It holds a Swiss banking licence and is supervised by FINMA. The parent company, Swissquote Group Holding Ltd, has been listed on SIX since 2000. Swissquote was founded by Marc Bürki and Paolo Buzzi. Bürki still runs the company as CEO, and since May 2026 the board of directors has been chaired by Hans-Rudolf Köng (former CEO of PostFinance).
Swissquote is primarily an online broker for trading shares, ETFs and cryptocurrencies. As a fully fledged digital bank, Swissquote also offers a multi-currency account, a pillar 3a and mortgages.

Swissquote fees: how much does the account cost?
At Swissquote, trading fees depend on order size: a share on SIX or in the US costs from CHF 3, ETFs from the ETF Leaders programme at most CHF 9. On top come a custody fee of CHF 80 to 200 a year plus VAT, 0.95 % for currency exchange, a transaction fee of 0.85 in the trading currency (e.g. USD 0.85 for US shares) and the stamp duty.

In our test purchase of 3 Alphabet shares on the Nasdaq (around USD 1'070), Swissquote showed fees of CHF 12.04 before the purchase. They consist of CHF 10 trading fee (tier 1'000 to 2'000), around CHF 0.71 transaction fee (USD 0.85) and around CHF 1.33 stamp duty (0.15 %). That is around 1.3 % of the order volume.

Money-saving tip: if you buy US shares regularly, you can hold USD in the foreign currency account and save the 0.95 % currency exchange on each purchase.
Swissquote ETF Leaders: ETFs for at most CHF 9
ETFs from the ETF Leaders programme have lower fees: CHF 3 up to CHF 500, CHF 5 up to CHF 1'000 and a flat CHF 9 above that. An ETF purchase of CHF 5'000 therefore costs CHF 9 instead of CHF 29. Swissquote savings plan: ETFs from CHF 3 with fractional units
With the savings plan, Swissquote automatically invests in shares, ETFs, crypto or thematic certificates, daily, weekly, twice a month or monthly, as you choose. There is no minimum amount, and thanks to fractional units even a small amount can be fully invested. Fees start at CHF 3 per execution.

- No minimum amount, fractional units up to four decimal places (activate once beforehand under «Fractional Trading»)

Example: CHF 200 a month into an MSCI World ETF
If you invest CHF 200 a month in an MSCI World ETF from the ETF Leaders programme, you pay CHF 3 trading fee, CHF 0.85 transaction fee and around CHF 0.30 stamp duty (0.15 %) per execution. That is around CHF 4.15 or 2.1 % of the amount saved, or around CHF 50 a year. Forex and CFDs run through a separate account with the CFXD, MetaTrader 4 and 5 platforms. These are leveraged products for experienced traders: according to Swissquote, 68.22 % of private investors lose money with them (as of October 2026).
Swissquote app tested: platform, charts and usability
Swissquote has one platform for web and app with TradingView charts. In our test we found our way around quickly: the overview shows assets, positions and cash in several currencies, and you can find securities by name, ISIN or ticker. An order takes just a few steps, and the savings plan can also be set up directly in the app. What we miss: fractional units have to be activated separately first, and US shares bought from a CHF account incur the 0.95 % currency exchange.

Who is Swissquote suitable for?
Swissquote is particularly suitable for investors with a larger portfolio who want to bundle shares, ETFs, crypto and pillar 3a at one Swiss bank and who value share register entry and a tax statement. Swissquote is less suitable for small portfolios and frequent purchases of US shares, because the custody fee and currency exchange weigh heavily.
| Investor type | Suitability | Why |
|---|---|---|
| ETF buyers with larger amounts | well suited | ETF Leaders max. CHF 9 per order |
| Investors with a large portfolio | well suited | custody fee capped at CHF 200 + VAT |
| Swiss dividend investors | well suited | share register free, tax statement |
| Crypto investors | suitable | 55 coins in your bank account, but 1 % fee |
| Small portfolios under approx. CHF 10'000 | less suitable | custody fee ≈ 0.9 % a year |
| Active traders with US shares | less suitable | CHF 29 from CHF 2'000, 0.95 % currency exchange |
